Course Overview

FRESHMAN YEAR

Welcome to your freshman programme.  Your freshman programme will provide you with all the knowledge and understanding to start you on your hairdressing career.

You will gain valuable experience  in dealing with customers while homing your practical skills and you will also receive in-depth theory knowledge to give you the understanding and knowledge needed to progress within your hairdressing career.

Within this programme you will be expected to complete the following topics as part of your apprenticeship frame work which forms part of your NVQ qualification

  • ERR (EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES)
  • All Formative  HAIRDRESSING assessments in log book
  • 602 exam paper (Health & Safety)
  • Health & safety pack
  • EDI (Equality, diversity and inclusion) pack
  • Functional skills English reading, writing, speaking and listening at level 1
  • Freshman life skills programme ( communication, team work, job readiness)
  • What matters programme ( External talks from Police, fire brigade, nurse)
  • Values, behaviours and attitude

When you have completed all of the above topics you will carry out an extended assignment on ‘KEY INFLUENCES WITHIN THE HAIRDRESSING INDUSTRY’ this assignment must be a minimum of 1000 words and you can choose and research any area within this subject, (Please do not copy and paste from the internet). When you have completed this assignment you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction for your work.

You do have the opportunity to complete the freshman year sooner by hitting the markers given to you on your tracker sheet, these are plotted at 6 months 9 months and 12 months- but you MUST complete ALL of the above with competency and with the approval of your assessor, and your employer.

On successful completion of your freshman programme you will then be promoted to your Graduate   programme.

GRADUATE YEAR

Congratulations on completing your Freshman year!!!  Well done

You are now ready to progress onto your Graduate year.

In this year you will be acquiring the skills to become a competent and qualified salon ready stylist.

This will include many elements that are listed below, within this programme you will be expected to complete all of the following topics.

  • All summative hairdressing assessments
  • Functional skills Maths and English at level 2 including speaking and listening
  • Sit the graduation exam
  • Attended careers information, advice and guidance lectures
  • Choose a Master class of your choice to attend, to improve skills with the points you have earned throughout your course

On completion of this Graduate year you will be a competent, qualified stylist, ready to work in the salon.

SENIOR PROGRAMME

Congratulations on achieving your level 2 qualification you are now officially a Senior.

This qualification will give you the advanced skills and knowledge you will need to be an advanced stylist/designer within your salon. As part of the senior programme we will expect you to achieve all of the following

  • Completed hairdressing Summative log book
  • Maths and English at level 2 including Speaking and Listening
  • ERR (Employment rights and responsibilities)
  • PLTS (Personal learning and thinking skills)
  • A mentoring session with a level 2 learner to include the review process
  • You will need to create a portfolio of three different designs from top to toe; you will then have to present one of the designs of your choice to your assessor so they can award you a pass, merit or distinction.

BARBERING NVQ

Welcome to your Barbering programme. This course will provide you with all the knowledge and understanding to start you on your Barbering career.

You will gain valuable experience in dealing with customers while you develop your practical skills.

You will also receive in-depth theory knowledge to give you the understanding you will need to progress within your barbering career.

Within this qualification you will be expected to achieve all that is listed below as part of your frame work towards your NVQ qualification

  • Completed summative hairdressing log book
  • ERR (Employment rights and responsibilities)
  • PLTS (Personal learning and thinking skills)
  • Math’s and English at level 1 to include speaking and listening
  • Produce a portfolio of three different hair designs for your own portfolio and one must be re created to show your assessor your skills.
  • Attend a one day course at the WAHL Academy with the Simon Shaw team
